The St. Vrain Historical Society, Inc. (SVHS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Colorado Corporation dedicated to the mission of “assuring a future for our community’s past” by working to preserve the heritage and history of Longmont, Colorado and the surrounding St. Vrain Valley while enhancing and encouraging a sense of community for all residents. To support its mission, SVHS fosters an awareness of, and appreciation for, local history among area citizens though historic education, interpretive programming, and the preservation of its four historic sites that they manage for their community’s education and enjoyment: Historic Hoverhome, the Hover Farmstead, Old Mill Park, and "Old" St. Stephen's Church.
The numerous activities, programs, and fundraisers of SVHS are managed by a fifteen-member board of directors who meet monthly and implemented by one full-time and three part-time staff, with the help of hundreds of active volunteers. In addition, SVHS also has numerous active committees, allowing members to become involved in areas which are of special interest to them.
SVHS has a prominent long-standing role in the community as a proponent of historic preservation, and has been instrumental in the development and refinement of local preservation ordinances, such as the designation of historical properties in three downtown districts. At Hoverhome, Old Mill Park, Old St. Stephen’s Church, and the Hover Farmstead, SVHS has built a distinguished record of successfully completing preservation projects, maintaining properties to protect their historic integrity, and making them accessible to the public.
Membership to SVHS is open to anyone interested in historic preservation and/or local history. SVHS’ list of members includes both long-time residents and newcomers, young and old, all of whom share an interest in the heritage of the area in which they live. Their commitment to preserving the past is evident in the many hours of volunteer service donated to the society.
The preservation project for the historic Affolter Cabin at Old Mill Park is a crucial undertaking, and The St. Vrain Historical Society is seeking donations and support to make it a reality.
This fall, our first step involves installing gutters on both the north and south sides of the Affolter Cabin. This initial phase, costing $2,952.00, is vital in addressing the log rot issue currently plaguing the cabin. By diverting water away from the structure and preventing it from accumulating at the base, we can ensure the cabin's longevity.
However, this is just the beginning. The subsequent phase involves replacing logs.
Please consider supporting this project to safeguard the Affolter Cabin's rich heritage and historical significance. Any donation is greatly appreciated; 100% of all Donations Will Go Directly Towards the Restoration of the Affolter Cabin
Make a donation to help The St. Vrain Historical Society with the continued care, preservation, maintenance, and operational support of “Old” St. Stephen’s Church. Donations will go toward the continued preservation and maintenance projects to ensure that this 1881 church remains protected for the community’s enjoyment and education. The St. Vrain Historical Society, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation, and donations are tax-deductible.
